VDRL BFP in pregnancy !

Why does the VDRL test for syphilis give a Biological False Positive in pregnancy ?
It does not occur in all pregnant women either.
And VDRL testing is needed in pregnant women because of the complications syphilis can cause to the newborn. Is there any other simple , cost effective way to test for syphilis in pregnant women ?
